Fabio Carrillo

Fabio Carrillo is Head of the Research Unit at the OR-X, a Swiss national research infrastructure for surgical translation and innovation. He leads the development and implementation of translational strategies that enable interdisciplinary research, prototyping, and validation of emerging surgical technologies. With a background in robotics and biomedical engineering, his work focuses on bridging the gap between research and clinical application.

Fabio studied Electronic Engineering at Universidad Simon Bolivar (USB, Venezuela) and University of Lund (LTH, Sweden). Additionally, he holds a Master's in Robotics, Systems and Control from ETH Zurich and completed his doctorate at ETH and Balgrist University Hospital, where he developed optimization algorithms for 3D surgical planning. He has led national (SNF LEDECO, SNF DRUJ, Open Research Data OR-X) and international projects (Horizon2020 FAROS) in surgical data science, translational research, and AI-based decision support. He served as Deputy Head of the ROCS group under Prof. Philipp Fürnstahl before assuming his current. Since 2023, he oversees the scientific strategy and the research operations and services of the OR-X, fostering collaborations across academia, healthcare, and the MedTech industry.
