Dr. Fabio Carrillo
Head of Research OR-X
Fabio Carrillo is Head of the Research Unit at the OR-X, a Swiss national research infrastructure for surgical translation and innovation. He leads the development and implementation of translational strategies that enable interdisciplinary research, prototyping, and validation of emerging surgical technologies. With a background in robotics and biomedical engineering, his work focuses on bridging the gap between research and clinical application.
Fabio studied Electronic Engineering at Universidad Simon Bolivar (USB, Venezuela) and University of Lund (LTH, Sweden). Additionally, he holds a Master's in Robotics, Systems and Control from ETH Zurich and completed his doctorate at ETH and Balgrist University Hospital, focusing on optimization algorithms for 3D surgical planning. Before assuming his current role, he served as Deputy Head of the ROCS group under Prof. Philipp Fürnstahl.
Fabio has led multiple national and international projects in surgical data science, translational research, and AI-based decision support (incl. SNF LEDECO, SNF DRUJ, the Open Research Data project and Horizon2020 FAROS). Since 2023, he has overseen the scientific strategy and research operations at OR-X, fostering collaborations across academia, clinical partners and the MedTEch industry.
